I think this is my favorite whiskey, very elegant, tastes amazing, the smoke is beautifully mixed with no overpowering flavors. The 16 was just too overpowering with smoke flavor for me, it was like octomore which is very smoky but has so many robust flavors that don’t over power each other. But the 16 was just plan smoke in my opinion. The 8 is so balanced with the flavors that I would chose this over any other whiskeys in my arsenal. It is best enjoyed when cooking, just have a nice dram in a glencairen glass and enjoy the smoky sweat flavors while making your favorite meal. 9.5 from me. There’s always room for improvement, but this Islay will give you great value for the flavors in the bottle. Please try this.

I would have to agree with some of the other reviews on here that this is a little less complex than the 16, but for the price, it's the best peaty, smokey Islay on the market. A friend first gave me a bottle of this and Laphroaig back in 1989 as a 'going away gift' as I was leaving the sunny climes of San Diego for the wintry Midwest stomping grounds where I grew up. I didn't open the bottles for a year and, instead, bought a bottle of the late and lamentedly no-longer, Glen Ord. I fell in love! When I told him about this over the phone, he laughed and asked how it compared to the Lagavulin 8 and the Laphroaig. I sheepishly told him I'd not opened them yet. When I did, they were both much smoother than the Glen Ord, and mellower, more drinkable. Since then, I've been hooked on Islay's and Speysides, much to many of my bourbon-drinking friends dismay.

Don’t go for this expecting the 16yr but this is still a formidable expression. Smoky, good amount of peat/phenols and a sweet underbelly.
