This World Whisky of the Year is a Bourbon deserves a place on your top shelf and in your glass.

The Barton 1792 Distillery has been in operation since 1874. It gets the name "1792" from the year that Kentucky became an official state in the US, and it’s also the name of one of their signature single barrel Bourbon Whiskeys. The Barton 1792 Distillery and Barton Brands are owned by Sazerac — one of America’s largest spirits companies. They control dozens of brands from low end to high end — mostly American Whiskeys and Bourbons — that are distributed around the world. The 1792 line of products are all premium, high-end Bourbons that should be in the regular rotation of your home bar.

Jim Murray can be controversial. But no one can doubt that he is not only a renowned Whisky expert with at refined palate, the annual updates to his "Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible" are also hugely influential. And a few months ago it was announced that in the 2020 edition he had given the top honor of "World Whisky of the Year" to 1792 Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon — awarding it 97.5 points.

Sazerac and Barton treat the exact specifications like a state secret — as you would expect with a winner like this. But we do know it is bottled at the barrel proof strength of 62.5% ABV without chill-filtration. So, if you buy only one bottle of premium Bourbon this month, make it this one. You’ll thanks us later.

Smartass corner:
2020 is a banner year for Sazerac. Their premium Whiskeys took the top three positions in the World Whisky of the Year contest this year: 1792 Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon came in 1st, William Larue Weller 125.7 Proof 2nd, and Thomas Hardy Sazerac Rye 128.8 Proof 3rd.
