A Single Malt exploration in wood with three cask types from Aberlour.

There is some question about the exact date of its founding. But we know for certain that James Fleming either built or rebuilt the Aberlour Distillery in 1879. We also know that Aberlour makes an amazing range of Highland Single Malts in the classic Speyside style and we’d gladly sample ANYTHING that they send our way. And their Whiskies win lots of awards, taking home medals in every serious industry competition they enter.

Aberlour has been making their limited edition Casg Annamh series since 2018. Each is comprised of just a handful of barrels — so it can be hard to get your hands on a bottle. But it’s worth the effort.

Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch 3 is their signature Single Malt that has been aged in a trio of barrel types — Spanish Sherry and two varieties of American Whiskey barrels. The combination delivers an interesting melange of classic Speyside flavors with some exotic rancio notes. And since it’s bottled at 48% ABV without chill-filtration or artificial coloring, this Spirit has the authenticity and strength to stand up to a splash of water as you savor each drop.

Smartass Corner:
In modern Scot’s Gaelic, "Casg Annamh" means "rare cask."

Appearance / Color
Ruddy Amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma is addictive with notes of brown butter, roasted nuts, marmalade, medjool dates, ginger, and dried red fruits.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The mouth-feel is viscous and oily and the flavor profile reminds us of baking spices, toasted granola clusters, dark chocolate, and peach cobbler with a drying tannin on the back palate.

Finish
The finish is medium-length with a cherry note and a bit of espresso.
