The famous herbal Liqueur from France delivers a deep, rich flavor profile made in secret.
Alexandre Le Grand created his signature Liqueur in 1863. With the help of a local chemist (pharmacist), he built upon a series of recipes for medicinal elixirs to arrive at a tasty result. To market the product, he named this Liqueur Bénédictine and claimed that it was a secret recipe developed by a bunch of Bénédictine DOM Liqueur monks who died during the French Revolution — a story still believed by many today. But no matter how it came about, there is no doubt of its popularity. The brand was acquired by Martini first, then Bacardi who manage it to this day.
The recipe for Bénédictine DOM Liqueur is a closely-guarded trade secret. There have been so many attempts to copy the flavor profile that the company maintains a collection of them in a museum-like "Hall of Counterfeits"… which is pretty funny. Supposedly the complete recipe is known to only three people and contains twenty-seven ingredients. Twenty-one of them are publicly known, including angelica, black tea, coriander, hyssop, juniper, saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon, honey, mace, myrrh, fir tree cone, aloe, clove, lemon balm, arnica, vanilla, orange zest berries, thyme, and lemon zest. The rest is up to your imagination.
