Origin Spirits has revealed an earthy, toasty Irish Single Malt finish in seaweed-charred casks for an umami influence.

After spending fourteen years working in France and Russia for Moët Hennessy, in 2013 Patrick Shelley founded Origin Spirits Ltd. in his native Ireland. With all that Spirits marketing experience and time in Russia, Vodka was the natural choice for his first commercial product release. Thus, Kalak Vodka was born. Shortly thereafter he launched Ornabrak Gin and then Currach Irish Whiskey. All are made from 100% Irish Single Malt distilled in copper pots in a partnership with West Cork Distillers.

This is one of the most unique finished cask Irish Whiskies we’ve ever tasted. Currach Atlantic Kombu Seaweed Cask starts rather traditionally. It is 100% Irish Single Malt that’s triple distilled and aged in ex-Bourbon casks… so far so good, right? But then they take virgin American oak casks and char them by burning North Atlantic Kombu seaweed inside. These seaweed-charred casks are used to finish the Single Malt for three months. The result is the quality Irish Single Malt that you are looking for with a gentle earthiness and umami savoriness.

Smartass Corner:
The "Currach" is an ancient Irish boat whose history goes back thousands of years to the Neolithic era, but is still in use today. It is formed of wicker, natural tar, and animal skins.

Appearance / Color
Golden Maple

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The nose is full with sultanas and marzipan over toffee, yeast, and the seashore.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The flavor profile leads with a mocha-espresso note and sea-salt caramels with roasted nuts, dark chocolate, toasted grains, and a pinch of apricot.

Finish
The finish is long, warm, earthy, and smooth.

Exceptional. This well-balanced dram has a complex nose with nuts, hints of marzipan, minerals, green vines and saltwater, and follows with an equally intricate flavor experience ending in a medium pepper-nut-chocolate finish. Simply delicious, and really standout for the calendar.
