A classic London dry-style Gin that recalls local herbs and sea of Brittany.
Glann Ar Mor Distillery — billed as the “Celtic Whiskey Company” — just sounds like it’s located in the Highlands of Scotland, right? But if you go there expecting bagpipes and kilts you’ll be disappointed. That’s because Glann Ar Mor Distillery is located in Brittany, France. It sits on a narrow peninsula jutting out in the English channel as if reaching back to its homeland. Anyway … this small, craft distillery has two “live fire” copper pot stills where they make their line of award-winning Whiskies and Gin.
Saint Maudez Gin du Tregor Gin is named after an Irish saint who landed in Brittany — Saint Maudez. There are dozens of churches and even a town named after him. The spirit is 100% wheat-based, making the grain smooth and neutral to the flavor profile. Importantly — and just like their line of Whiskies — they bottle at high proof (44.7%) without chill filtration to preserve the aromatics. And in this case the aromatic botanicals include Juniper, coriander, angelica root, several citrus zests, and a raft of local herbs.
Smartass Corner:
Truth be told, there is a VERY strong Celtic influence in Brittany since the Celts ruled this mainland shore — and much of central Europe — for centuries before the Roman conquest.
