Glen Scotia Victoriana is bringing sexy back to Campbeltown single malts.
Distilling in the Kintyre Peninsula dates back more than 400 years to 1609. The hamlet of Campbeltown was founded in 1832 and quickly became known as “The Whisky Capital of the World.” The era of Prohibition and the subsequent emergence of Highland single malt dominance ended the reign of Campbeltown. Glen Scotia is a more recent branding by the Loch Lomond Group in an effort to recreate the magic of Campbeltown’s bygone era.
Glen Scotia Victoriana starts with their classic Campbeltown-styled single malt aged in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels. How long it is aged at this stage is a bit of a mystery since Victoriana is a “non-age-statement” (NAS) Whisky. The kicker is that this little sexy gem is then finished in deep-char virgin oak casks, which adds extra vanillin and a deeper, richer color. And they aren't messing around, serving it up at 54.8% ABV. Your taste buds and the newly minted Double Gold Medal it just received in San Francisco will both tell you that it turned out pretty darned good indeed.
