A truly unique Irish Whiskey finished in virgin mizunara casks.
Glendalough was founded by "five friends from Wicklow and Dublin." They began their journey creating Poitín — a traditional Irish distillate made in very small pot stills (sort of like small batch Irish Moonshine). From there it was a short and easy step into a variety of Irish Whiskeys and Herbal-infused Gins as well. Everything is made by hand with a good measure of love.
It’s easy to get jaded in this business. Lots of folks "Claim" to doing things new and unique, but the truth is that there is a lot of same-old out there. But Glendalough 13 Year Old Mizunara Finish brings in a new wrinkle that is darn tasty. It is widely known that mizunara oak — native to Japan — is notoriously hard to work with but exceptionally good at imparting flavor to Spirits. The problem is that long-term aging in casks made of this rare wood is very difficult and VERY expensive for lots of reasons dealing with cellular structure and cellulose fiber-bonding. So the good lads at Glen aged their stellar Irish Whiskey for thirteen years in ex-Bourbon casks and then finish it in virgin mizunara puncheons — getting the flavor, age, and flavor profile they were looking for.
Smartass Corner:
Puncheons are larger barrels. Where a conventional American Bourbon casks holds approximately 53 gallons, a puncheon can hold anywhere from 72 to 120 gallons.
