Green Spot, but somehow even better.

The Mitchell & Son started their wine-selling gig in 1805, but when the Victorian palates suddenly demanded Whiskey in streams, they entered the bonding business. They purchased fresh Whiskey under bond, matured it themselves, and bottled it as their own brand. It’s a great way of making Whiskey without actually making Whiskey, but it’s also a fantastic way to evade the excise tax. Now, we don’t really know when the first Green Spot was created, but by the 1920s, The Mitchell & Son had bottled more than a hundred Sherry casks of Whiskey per year. Usually, the distiller matured Whiskey for five years before they blended and sold it to the merchant, who then matured it for at least five more years. It all depended on the color of the spot, which marks different ages: Blue is 7, Green is 10, Yellow is 12, and Red is 15 years.

Green Spot Chateau Montelena is a gloriously vibrant 10-year-old that received a lavish finish in French oak casks that once held Zinfandel wine from the esteemed Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley, California. Green Spot is already a cult classic, but this exquisite finish turned it into a must-have delight with a beautiful bouquet of cranberry, pomegranate, and maraschino cherry, and a silky mouthfeel that carries the remarkable wine influence. We. Are. In. Love!

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The combination of vanilla sweetness and crisp oak introduces you to notes of white chocolate, marshmallow, signature Green Spot red apples, pomegranate, cranberries, and maraschino cherries. So much going on!

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate carries the sweetness and dryness of the wine cask and brings notes of pot still spices, zesty citrus, orchard fruit, red berries, and complex layers of marzipan and toasted oak.

Finish
The rewardingly long finish continues the opulence and ends on a slightly nutty note.

You can smell the oak and vanilla and if you pay attention you can catch the red apple in it too. I enjoyed this one and wouldn’t mind having a bottle on my shelf

Very pleasant and quite drinkable. Loaded with complexity. Rounded and elegant, everything is well integrated. The wine barrel aging lends this a bit of a Cognac note that serves as a lovely juxtaposition to the whiskey, giving it tremendous depth. Some whiskeys can be engaging and interesting but tough to drink. This is not one of those. This one is a pleasure to drink. A mix of fruit notes carries through from the nose into the mouth along with oak and its accompanying vanilla character, some sweetness in the finish. I get the mentioned marshmallow more in the mouth and immediate finish, then that fades to a sort of oaky character that lingers.

For me, from the advent calendar this year, this one has been the best so far out of the 9 that we've had thus far. Nice one.
