Ten years in a mine shaft and it comes out pretty.

We shouldn’t be surprised that a Single Malt Whisky could be made well in Sweden. After all, Sweden sits at about the same latitude as Scotland and is surrounded by the same North Sea. I guess we should really be asking what took them so long to get around to it? Mackmyra has been tinkering with their malt-distillery since 1999, but up until a few years ago all their product was used in side beverages, blends, and flavored drinks until they got it right. They started releasing their Single Malts in 2008. All of them are aged in new, Swedish oak and are aged 50 meters underground in an abandoned mineshaft.

Mackmyra 10 YO Single Malt is their newest and a milestone for this Swedish distillery. They have had a few limited releases and special editions that are a bit older, but this is the first time that they have had enough decade-old spirit to issue it as a bonafide, full-scale offering. Chief Whisky-maker Angela D’Orazio assembles a range of their Single Malt aged between ten and thirteen years in four different cask types: virgin Swedish oak, Oloroso Swedish oak, and both first-fill and reused Bourbon casks.
