Oh please, do slap us gently, Šamar Brandy.
Anyone who has ever spent some time in Central or Eastern Europe probably partook in the tradition of drinking Rakija – a traditional Slavic fruit-based Spirit that’s especially popular in Serbia. It’s THE Spirit down there and such a huge part of the folklore, starring in more stories and poems than you can count. Now, the plum-based Šljivovica (or Slivovitz) is to Rakija kind of what Bourbon is to Whiskey. In the sense that all Bourbon is Whiskey, but not all Whiskey is Bourbon. Šljivovica is a fruit Brandy, made from Damson plums, which is why it’s often referred to also as simply plum Brandy.
And then, there’s Šamar Brandy. First, let’s get the linguistic stuff out of the way. The word “šamar” is a commonly used word in South Slavic languages that designates a slap or blow in the face. Don’t worry, the Spirit doesn’t end on this less-than-friendly note – Šamar Brandy is described as “Šamar koji miluje”, which basically means a slap that caresses. Now, that sounds better.
This slap-you-in-the-face-in-but-you’ll-like-it Spirit is the first Šljivovica (and also Rakija!) to be made from a combo of plum and quince, based on a secret recipe. Crafted by Master Distiller Mileta Manović from the finest local handpicked plums and quince, this 100% natural and unique Spirit respects the tradition of Rakija and manages to modernize it without taking away its mysterious soul. Let yourself be seduced by this magic Spirit that’s been uniting nations for centuries. Enjoy it chilled, in a Šamar & Ginger with lemon juice and Ginger Ale or in a combo of lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white in a Šamar Sour.
