A Scottish blend not unlike a field on a warm summer's day.
Founded by friends Marcus Pickering and Matthew Gammell, the Summerhall Distillery was built on the site of an old veterinary school in Edinburgh in 2013, making it the first new Gin Distillery in the city for more than 150 years. Today, it is home to Pickering’s Gin and The Broody Hen Whisky. Everything is done by hand on site with traditional equipment – thermometers for temperature gauging, a home-made label machine to help apply labels by hand, and a vat of hot wax for hand-sealing the bottles. The good old ways from the days when barrels would still be smuggled in funeral corteges and bottles hidden in the nests of broody hens.
Back in 2018, the guys were looking for fine casks across the Highlands, islands, and Lowlands of Scotland to oak-age their Gins. They settled in the Highlands where five stacked casks reminiscent of a hen coop stood out. Voila, the special cask selection for The Broody Hen Blended Scotch Whisky. Get ready to be transported to a field on a warm summer’s day with aromas of fresh barley, light honey, and butterscotch leading into flavors of delectable caramel, vanilla, and manuka honey. What’s not to like, really? Ideal for sipping neat, on the rocks, or in a Whisky Highball.
