A Blended Japanese Whisky that shines naturally with a bright, "fruit and sea" profile.

On the North side of Japan near Niigata, the Shonibu Distillery sits just about 300 yards from the Sea of Japan. Entrepreneur Ken Usami has been brewing Niigata Beer in this idyllic location for more than twenty years. And he was the first person to be licensed to distill Whisky in the entire prefecture in 2017. Ever since, he has been sourcing premium Spirits and finishing them in rare, Mizunara oak. These early efforts have been paying off with robust sales and a dozen awards across his product range

Shinobu Blended Japanese Whisky is quite a dram. It is a blend of 50% malt and 50% grain Whiskies. Each are aged respectively in ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon casks. Then the two are married and placed to finish in rare Mizunara oak and bottled at 43% ABV with no artificial coloring. It’s a delightful Japanese Whisky with a light, satisfying profile.

Smartass Corner:
The Japanese word "Shonibu" translates roughly as "forbearance" or "endurance," reflecting one of the qualities of the Samurai Spirit.

Flavor Spiral TM
  • nutty nutty
  • peaty peaty
  • slightly sweet slightly sweet
  • lemon lemon

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma is bright with notes of sea spray, vegetable stew, a hint of peat, and a little sweetness.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The interesting sea-salt note is carried through to the palate with slow-roasted nuts, Meyer lemon zest, a bit of apple, and a dash of black pepper kick.

Finish
The finish is medium-length and slick with a light spice after-burn.
