As your FlaviAir flight descends into the Highlands, we arrive at the village of Tomatin, cradled by the lush Monadhliath Mountains and nourished by the pure waters of the Alt na Frith. This landscape has supported over a century of whisky-making—and it’s here that The Antiquary 15-Year-Old finds its modern home.
The story of The Antiquary begins in 1888, when Edinburgh brothers John and William Hardie, originally tea blenders, turned their skills to whisky. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s 1816 novel The Antiquary, they created a refined blend that quickly gained a following across Europe for its smooth elegance and sophisticated character.
In 1996, the brand found a new base at Tomatin Distillery in the Highlands. Under Tomatin’s care, The Antiquary retained its heritage while gaining access to an exceptional range of aged Scotch. In 2024, the range was revived with a refreshed lineup, paying tribute to more than a century of blending expertise.
Your in-flight dram, The Antiquary 15-Year-Old, reflects that legacy with quiet confidence. Aged in carefully selected oak casks, it brings together honeyed malt, dried fruit, vanilla, and soft oak in a smooth, approachable profile that feels both classic and contemporary.
As Captain McFly notes, even the Victorian-inspired bottle nods to the brand’s literary and historical roots. And as the team at Tomatin puts it, their long history—once being the largest distillery in the world—gives them access to remarkable stocks that shape blends like The Antiquary for a new generation of whisky drinkers.
This is Highland refinement in a glass—heritage, elegance, and storytelling, all cruising at a very comfortable altitude."We begin our descent into Hekinan City on Japan’s southern coast, where sea breezes and quiet resilience shape one of the country’s rising whisky names: Hinotori—“Phoenix” in Japanese.
The whisky is produced at Hekinan Distillery, founded in 1949 and recently reborn after a long pause. This rebirth is central to Hinotori’s identity. Like its namesake, the Phoenix, the distillery embraces renewal—honoring its legacy while stepping confidently into a new era of Japanese whisky.
Your sample, Hinotori Blended 5 Years Old, is crafted from a combination of grain and malt whiskies aged for a minimum of five years in American oak barrels. The result is a smooth, light-bodied blend with gentle layers rather than aggressive power. Expect vanilla and soft orchard fruit up front, a touch of sweet spice through the mid-palate, and a whisper of smoke tying it together.
This is Japanese whisky at its most understated and calm—balanced, clear, and quietly elegant. It’s a dram that doesn’t shout for attention but rewards those who lean in and listen.
In the skies above Aichi, Hinotori stands as a symbol of tradition reborn—proof that a family-run distillery, guided by patience and craft, can rise again with grace, subtlety, and beautifully composed flavor.
