A taste of Mauritius.
Mauritius holds many treasures. Miles of sugarcane fields. Vanilla, pineapples and lychees. It had the dodo bird! Until that was hunted to extinction in the 17th century. And it has Gold. We’re not talking about precious metal, but precious liquid. Rum.
In fact, Mauritius recently became one of the few places in the World to produce two types of Rum, both molasses and agricole. Until 2006 there was a prohibition on the production of agricole, as the island was so heavily reliant on its sugar-refining industry, but with the lifting of that ban came a minor explosion of the product and Mauritius is now setting out its stall as a global provider of our favorite temptation. Gold of Mauritius Rum and the craft team behind it, led by Frederic Bestel, is the best of the island lot.
Their Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum Solera 5 is matured using the famed solera technique. For the production, three high quality Rums from the island with ages 1,4 and 5 were carefully selected and balanced with each other. The marriage of old and new provides an extremely smooth and balanced end result, full of character and integrity. After the wedding, the Rum is stored for another 6 to 8 months in port wine barrels.
Despite the relative young age, this Rum exhibits astonishing complexity. You see, five years is quite a lot in such a hot, tropical climate. One cannot deny the fact that the conditions on the island in the Indian Ocean are made for the cultivation of sugar cane and the maturation of Rum. The Rum represents Mauritius in all its glory. Oh, by the way, this Rum won a World Spirits Award in 2016, we’ve been told. Not bronze, not silver, but …. ?
